Prison Break is an American television drama series created by Paul Scheuring. It follows the life of Michael Scofield, a convicted bank robber who forms an elaborate plan to escape from prison. The first season aired on Fox in 2005 and comprised 23 episodes. The series was subsequently picked up by the Fox Broadcasting Company in 2006, which broadcast it for five seasons until 2009, when it was cancelled due to low ratings. It has also spawned two six-part comic book miniseries adaptations, one of which takes place between Seasons 3 and 4 of the TV series based on the continuity with respect to events depicted in that comic book miniseries; one taking place before Season 1; and one taking place after Season 5. The first was released in hardback, trade paperback, and vinyl graphic novel form by Wildstorm Comics in 2006. The other two were published by Dynamite Entertainment. The show's title derives from the euphonious phrase "Prison Break Out", spoken twice in the episode "Dead Man Walking" (first line: "How about a little Prison Break out?"; second line: "Come on Mikey, let's get this show on the road."). The action is centered around an elaborate scheme to break Michael Scofield (Wentworth Miller) out of prison using others as pawns. To win the trust of the authorities, Michael pretends to be an anguished religious man who has his dying brother recant his confession. The plot takes place in rural Fox River State Penitentiary (essentially a modern-day version of Alcatraz) in Fox River, Illinois. The series is set in 2005–2006, during which time the show was filmed. The first few episodes are set in Malaysia, where T-Bag escaped from prison. The series soon moves back to Fox River State Penitentiary, now under tight security due to T-Bag's escape attempt. T-Bag's escape attempt is thwarted, and he is recaptured. The series then moves to the present day, where the story arc of the first season revolves around Michael's brother, Lincoln Burrows (Dominic Purcell), being accused of betraying him while he was incarcerated at Fox River State Penitentiary. However, both are later acquitted. The show's premise is based on the federal prison escape in Alcatraz in 1963 by three prisoners, Frank Morris, John Anglin and Clarence Anglin (who went by the prison nickname of "The Angles"), which was dramatized in an episode of "I Spy" that aired on December 6 of that year. In 1966, Allen West was transferred from Alcatraz to the federal prison in Leavenworth, Kansas, where he started planning a similar escape. In 1967, West and six others did get out but were caught two weeks later. In 1979, West escaped from Leavenworth with six others via a garbage chute, but was re-captured the same night. In addition to being a prison break action drama with many characters, "Prison Break" also incorporates other themes such as religious themes and political conspiracy theories. This has been seen in episodes such as "Brother's Keeper," "The Old Ball Game," and particularly in the episode entitled "First Down.
